Kristy Schlueter and Stephen Sherman, both graduate students in the University of Maryland?s Department of Aerospace Engineering, have been awarded a prestigious National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship to support three years of M.S. and Ph.D. research. Gino Perotta, an M.S. student with Prof. Anya Jones received an honorable metnion for his application to the NSF NDSEG. The highly competitive fellowship awards recipients full tuition, all mandatory fees, a monthly stipend, and up to $1,000 a year in medical insurance (About NDSEG, 2013). The fellowship is portable, meaning recipients can use the funding from the fellowship to attend any U.S. institution that offers the supported disciplines.

After graduating in 2008 from the University of Notre Dame with a B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering, Kristy worked for the Boeing Company as a structural engineer for 2 years. At Boeing, she redesigned the structural components of the Chinook helicopter for international and domestic governmental customers. Kristy is currently using both numerical simulations and experiments to investigate the effect of wall boundaries on the flow field of rotating wings with Professor Anya Jones. She spent part of summer 2012 performing flapping wing experiments in a water tunnel at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson AFB.

Stephen Sherman earned his BS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Maryland, graduating with departmental honors. As a graduate student under Prof. Norman Wereley at the University of Maryland Smart Structures Lab, his research has been on simulations of magnetorheological fluids, publishing two papers in IEEE Transaction on Magnetics. He has also been awarded the University of Maryland Minta Martin Fellowship, and received a NSF Graduate Research Fellowship honorable mention. Under the fellowship, he will continue research his research on magnetorheological fluids.

Congratulations to Kristy and Stephen for receiving the NDSEG Fellowship!
