AE Pride Day Virtual Discussion w/ Out in Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (oSTEM) Pride month is an important way to celebrate and support diverse sexual and gender identities, expressions, and sexual orientations. We encourage all of you to find ways in which you can honor and commemorate the LGBTQ+ community, not only this month, but year round.
The Department of Aerospace Engineering's Committee for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CDEI) together with Out in Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (oSTEM) will host a virtual discussion on Pride Day, this Monday June 28 at 6:00pm ET. Pride Day is celebrated to commemorate the Stonewall riots. These riots began on June 28, 1962 following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, and are now considered one of the most pivotal events in the gay rights movement in the United States.
The virtual discussion will provide a brief overview of important LGBTQ+ social movements; celebrate the progress we've made so far; and explain how we can all be a part of continuing this progress, as we still have much work to do. We will also review resources for individuals who do not identify as LGBTQ+ and those who do identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community.
We want to take the time to acknowledge how thankful we are to have an incredibly diverse, talented, and engaged LGBTQ+ community within our Department of Aerospace Engineering. We also want to reiterate both the Clark School and UMD's messages condemning oppression against the LGBTQ+, and especially the transgender community.
